Speech recognition on Mac: how it works
Modern speech recognition uses artificial intelligence models that can understand dozens of languages. Here we explain how they run on a Mac and what to expect from them when dictating.
What is speech recognition?
It is the technology that turns what you say into text. Today’s models understand dozens of languages, including Spanish, and write the punctuation automatically.
How it runs on a Mac
On a Mac with an Apple chip, Hablaki takes advantage of the chip’s unified memory and graphics processor to transcribe very quickly. On a Mac with an Intel processor it uses a version optimized for the processor. Hablaki automatically chooses the right one for your computer.
Sizes and performance
| Version | Size | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum accuracy | 1.6 GB | Macs with an Apple chip |
| Balanced | 480 MB | Any Mac |
| Lightweight | 145 MB | Modest machines |
How to get the best results

How well does it understand Spanish?
Very well in general. Accuracy improves with the largest version and by speaking in full sentences, and you can add your own vocabulary for names and terms.
How much space does the voice component take?
Between 145 MB and 1.6 GB depending on your Mac. Hablaki chooses the most suitable version for your computer.
Does it need internet?
Recognition happens entirely on your device (Mac and Windows). Internet is used to download the voice component, activate your license, and run periodic license checks.
