Speech to text on your device, Mac and Windows
Local dictation means speech recognition happens inside your computer. You do not wait on a server, and your audio does not travel anywhere. Internet is only needed to download the model, activate your license, and run the periodic license checks.
How local speech recognition works
An artificial intelligence model, already installed on your computer, takes the audio from the microphone and returns the text. Today's speech recognition models reach very good quality in Spanish and other languages, with no need to send your audio to any server.
Local or cloud
| Criterion | Local (on your computer) | Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy | The audio stays on your computer | The audio is sent to a server |
| Internet | For the model download, activation, and license checks; your voice is not sent | Essential to transcribe |
| Speed | Depends on your computer; very fast on Apple chips | Depends on your connection |
| Space | Between 145 MB and 1.6 GB depending on the model | Takes none |
| Cost of use | No per-use fees | Usually charged per use or by subscription |
What you need with Hablaki
- A Mac with an Apple chip (M1 or later) or an Intel chip, or a PC with Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit).
- Space for the voice component: about 1.6 GB on Apple chips; 480 MB on Intel and Windows (145 MB on modest machines).
- Internet to download that component, activate your license, and run the periodic license checks.
- Microphone and accessibility permissions.
What accuracy and speed to expect
It depends on the model and your Mac. In our tests on a Mac with an M4 Pro chip, four seconds of speech were transcribed in half a second. On Intel and Windows machines the model is lighter: it is a bit slower and may make more mistakes with accents, noise, or uncommon words. To improve the result, speak in full sentences and add your names and terms to the vocabulary.
No speech-to-text system is perfect. Always check anything important before you send it.
