How to create subtitles
- Upload the video or audio. MP4, MOV, WEBM, MP3, WAV and more all work.
- Press “Transcribe”. Each sentence gets its own start and end time.
- Review the text. Click any sentence to correct it.
- Download “SRT subtitles” or “VTT subtitles”. The files include your corrections.
SRT or VTT?
| Format | When to use it |
|---|---|
| SRT | The most compatible: YouTube, Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro and most players. |
| VTT | For web players and your own websites. |
Uploading subtitles to YouTube
In YouTube Studio, open your video, go to “Subtitles”, add the language and choose to upload a file. Select the SRT you downloaded. If your video is in another language and you want to reach a wider audience, you can also create an English version: read how to translate audio to English.
Tips for great results
- Pick the right audio language before you start.
- Turn on “Identify speakers” if you want each subtitle to say who is speaking.
- If a sentence is too long on screen, split it or shorten it while editing.
